For the fall semester I will be participating in service learning for my Religion 120 class. In the past I have volunteered at the salvation army and an after school program called tiger time. This semester, however, I will be volunteering for SMILE, a program run through Gonzaga University. Each week me and four other college students go to Longfellow elementary school where we look after elementary school children for an hour. In that hour we do everything from playing games to arts and crafts.
In taking an hour out of my week and devoting that time to children I hope to give them someone to talk to, to make a difference in their lives, and ultimately to be there friend. As part of my commitment to SMILE I will be volunteering all year and hopefully future years to come.
Seeing as how I have only volunteered once I have yet to do an interview but I plan on doing that within the next couple of weeks. At that time I will post the questions and answers on my blog.
